I have immediate and strong suspicion when hearing of using a Christmas light remote on a motor that might pull up to 18 amps when starting up. If you make wooden blast gates (just sandwiched layers of smooth wood), they're simple to install by just drilling holes in the edge of the blast gate such that the magnets line up when the gate is open all the way.
