In cold land regions, the timing of thawing (which can be derived from satellite radar and radiometer measurements) is coincident with the onset of seasonal snowmelt, soil thaw, and ice breakup on large rivers and lakes. Salinity Data Show the Movement of Freshwater From the Amazon A United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket will carry SMAP into orbit. Discover, share and explore stunning images and videos of space from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory -- now available for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Android devices. This mission is being developed in response to recommendations of the National Research Council Decadal Survey report (Earth Science and Applications from Space: National Imperatives for the Next Decade and Beyond, Space Studies Board, National Academies Press, 2007). (2015) This first SWOT users' workshop was an opportunity for early engagement of key user organizations (USGS, NOAA, Navy, MERCATOR, etc.). NASA scientists are on a mission to map global soil moisture, and through SciStarter, they’re teaming up with citizen scientists to gather valuable data from the ground to complement and validate what is seen from space. Take part in discovery as it happens and join a community of worldwide explorers! Please contact Christine Lee with any applications activities you would like to pursue with ECOSTRESS - christine.m.lee@jpl.nasa.gov Access. To keep in contact with the spacecraft exploring our solar system and the universe beyond, JPL operates a network of large radio antennas called the DSN. NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory Jobs Maximizing Student Potential in STEM, or MSP, offers part-time and full-time internship opportunities at JPL to underrepresented students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines. SMAP soil moisture and freeze/thaw information provide excellent capability in terms of resolution, sensitivity, coverage, and sensing depth. June 2013, Estimating the human contribution to groundwater depletion in the Middle East, from GRACE data, land surface models, and well observations

Mission controllers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, today sent commands to unfurl the massive 20-foot-wide (6-meter) reflector antenna on NASA's new Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) observator. Soil moisture provides more accurate information on the state of saturated soils that impacts stream flow, nutrient loading and turbidity; and these both lead to better management of urban water supply and quality. The integration of soil moisture has been determined to be the single most critical parameter in state-of-the-ground models. View recent data of Earth's vital signs, follow NASA satellites and learn how they collect critical data about Earth's atmosphere, land and oceans, and see spectacular views of our home planet from space with this desktop app and visualization tool. This app has specific information about the science and purpose of the GRAIL Mission, and features daily mission news updates, images of the spacecraft during assembly and testing, videos and 3D models of the spacecraft and moon. NASA’s innovative soil moisture mapper, a new environmental satellite launching in January, has been fueled up for blastoff from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Information on surface soil moisture and freeze/thaw is critical to evaluating ground trafficability and mobility. Dara Entekhabi, the science team leader of NASA’s Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite, was selected by the American Geophysical Union (AGU) to receive the 2015 Hydrologic Sciences Award. SMAP will provide information on water availability and environmental stress for estimating plant productivity and potential yield.
