Since the demise of the state monopoly Polskie Koleje Państwowe (PKP) the Polish rail network has been broken up into around 10 different operators that manage different routes and trains. If you are buying 30 days in advance, even tickets for the fastest trains can be affordable for the student. Built in 1857 by the Kingdom of Prussia, its fanciful turrets and glamorous interiors have recently been restored. Poland has invested heavily over the past decade to modernise its trains and stations, which now frequently compare to some of the best in Europe. Which platform? Except on EIP trains, you can board a train without a ticket if the ticket line’s not moving and the departure is imminent.

Most of the local/commuter trains to/from Warszawa are operated by Koleje Mazowieckie or SKM - the trains to/from Chopin Airport are operated by SKM. Despite the fact that the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, there's still been a bit of an invisible wall with regards to train travel between east and west. Long-distance intercity train journeys are operated by the national rail company PKP. Some stations now indicate the track number as well as the platform number, but these can be erratically distributed in non-numerical order across the station. This service does not operate in EIP trains. A better bet is to look at the side of the train. Reservations are required and you'll need to pay an additional supplement to take these trains. * When booking tickets for journeys within Poland on the international EC trains, PKP InterCity categorises these services as EIC services.
