Alice subjects herself to a sentence of 96 years in total so that Darlene can be pardoned, and we (the viewers) realize that they are both innocent.
Naive high school graduates, best friends since childhood, take a high school trip and are taken in by a con man named Nick who get them into serious trouble. The fact that Hunter could write Brokedown Palace *and* those two other timeless gems on the same day is practically a miracle. Having endured the first few minutes of the film, it became incredibly apparent that whoever put their name to this film did not have the first inclination on how to portray Thais or Thailand properly, which is a shame, as it distracted from what otherwise could have been an interesting focus on the girls' tested friendship and the touched on subjects of the corrupt Thai justice system and politics.

However, Alice talks Darlene into going to Thailand instead, after comparing the prices of both destinations. $100, Over I mean, a Thai courtroom without a Garuda and a picture of the King? Alice(Claire Danes) and Darlene(Kate Beckinsale) have been best friends since forever and after they graduate they decide to take a trip to Thailand.
A little odd, perhaps, since it seems to be about life rather than the ineffable. This is such a beautiful song. This Movie has stuck with me ever since and remain one of my favorites!

I'm smiling for you right now. I was staying the night at my sister's house one night, and it was after she and my nephew had fallen asleep that I had watched a few films already and still really had nothing better to do, but was not going to sleep any time soon. When I think about the line "Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul." If neither of them were guilty - was that part there to reveal that the rich girl slept with the guy? Great movie...personally I always felt she was guilty and finally admited it. The film does a solid job of keeping viewers guessing as to whether (or which) of the girls was involved, and Bill Pullman is perfect as their sleazy lawyer.
Maybe this is as simple as the narrator finding a new lover, but I think the first three songs of the second side are parables that work together to tell us that love, validation, and self-sufficiency will all happen … they aren’t always easy and there will be fear and loneliness mixed in, but look for them and you'll find them.

At the time I was first immersing myself in the glories of American Beauty I was only about 18 or 19. Where this film grabs me, however, is its ending. I remember a false start they had at the Telluride show in '87.
Whether this happened because the narrator died (or is dying and is telling us about what’s going to happen, the way I’ve always heard it), because his lover left him and he’s totally bummed, or because of an apocalyptic event doesn’t matter, the point is that he is facing a solitary world beyond.
